 پڕوشە عەزیز میرزا

In today’s society, we are surrounded by social media. This includes pictures and videos that in a blink of an eye, can share your life with the world. With many things comes its pros and cons, the pros in having social media at the tip of your finger is that it helps keep viewers become more aware of every event in the world wherever you may be. We are able to show when a tragic event is happening and keep the society ‘woke’. Although with pros come some cons, one being that social media does not always show us every detail, we are only shown what we should see. An example of this is, during a terrorist attack, only the civilians killed are shown, we are not shown who the terrorist is. In this reflection paper, I will be discussing how we do not cover everything in the media properly. More importantly this reflection paper will be regarding the recent attack on a Kurdish city in Northern Syria being attacked by the Turkish government and how there is no social media coverage on the incident.
To go further into detail, recently there have been multiple tragic bombings happening in the Middle East. While most of them are getting covered by the media, not all are being shown to the rest of the world. One attack that has affected me in a personal way is the attack on the city of Afrin in Northern Syria by the Turkish government. As a Kurd in Canada, my goal and dedication is to show the world how amazing my culture and history is. Although just recently after seeing how none of my peers around me are aware of what is happening, I have noticed that this task is more difficult said than done. Kurd’s have been dealing with bomb attacks from multiple countries outside of Iraq and more than 165 people have been killed. What the social media does not show is that the Afrin genocide could possibly become the next Armenian genocide. I, myself am consistently on twitter, Instagram, and Kurdish news networks trying to educate people on what is happening and why it is happening. I notice more and more each day that not everyone understands what it is happening. Shockingly a lot of people do not even know who Kurdish people are. To help give a background on the situation, the attacks on Afrin are happening because the president of Turkey (Erdogan) has declared that there should be no Kurd’s left in the city. The president feels as if Kurdish people are a threat and he does not want them to form their own type of government, as a solution he has decided to bomb the innocent Kurdish civilians. The Kurd’s have had enough and want to oppose against the Turkish government, once Erdogan noticed this he then began sending out bombs and missiles to Afrin. Making a statement by showing what he can do to other Kurdish cities in Iraq and Iran. I believe that the media does not capture everything that is happening. Whereas using Palestine for an example, everything is being broadcasted and shown to the world. Protests and millions of tweets are being shared with a hashtag saying ‘#FreePalestine’. Both countries are in a horrible crisis, both are having their people killed, but why isn’t the media covering both? The amount of press I see about the attacks on Palestine are close to three times as big when compared to Afrin. No attack is ‘better’ than the last, these are all innocent people being killed. I believe that because Kurdistan just recently became known to the world since the ISIS attacks and how we have Peshmerga (soldiers) involved, people have started to notice what kind of people we are. In my opinion, I have noticed that all social media is about is, fame. The way to get viewers to pay attention to a certain topic is if the topic is known, already have been talked about, if people know it and if it is trending. Since Kurdistan does not have the amount of ‘popularity’ as other countries, the media does not cover what these people go through. Seeing as how if it was not for my parents I would have never received the correct information about this issue from the media. This is an big issue considering how all adolescents my age watch is social media. Titles and fame should not be a factor when discussing world issues.
All in all, the media coverage on more than half of these countries just like Kurdistan is very low and not shown. I believe that if more people like myself, talk about it and educate people on the events that are happening then we might have a chance at giving each issue in the world a fair chance at being seen and
 helped.
